Steve Winand is a native Yorker and Co-Owner of Shank’s Mare Outfitters. Established in 1978, Shank’s Mare specializes in paddlesports, hiking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing, supplying clothing, gear, trips, tours, and instruction. The outdoor education division of Shank’s Mare features a full teaching program in kayaking, an outdoor adventure camp for kids, Susquehanna River field trips for students, and a wide variety of educational and leisure time programs for children and adults. The mission of Shank’s Mare is to promote responsible use of the natural world while enjoying the outdoors in a safe and respectful manner.
Steve and his wife, Liz, have been active in the York community for many years. Steve has volunteered with various organizations including as an original member of the York County Heritage Rail Trail Commission. Steve and Liz started the Center City Business League in downtown York in the 1980’s, which eventually became the Main Street York program and now Downtown Inc. Both Steve and Liz have been past presidents of the Olde York Street Fair.
Steve resides with his wife, Liz, in the Long Level area on the shores of the Susquehanna River, where their business is also located. Their son Devin is the second generation now involved in Shank’s Mare.
