RIVERKEEPER ISSUE STATUS: Monitoring

LOCATION: Red Lion, PA – York County

ISSUE IN BRIEF: This winter, we partnered with concerned residents to express opposition to the proposed special exception rezoning and development request of land that housed the former Red Lion Country Club. The 58-acre property includes Barshinger Creek and is currently owned by Red Lion Area School District. Red Lion schools have used the land as an outdoor classroom and cross-country course. The public has been using it as an open green space for peace and solitude.

The Barshinger Creek watershed is important as it consists mostly of wetlands and drains to the E. Branch Codorus Creek, which feeds Lake Redman, York’s public drinking water source. It is an impaired waterway, and millions of dollars have been spent restoring the creek directly downstream of the proposed development.

Ted Evgeniadis, Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper – met with local residents and attended several township meetings. Ted also coordinated an email action alert campaign which was signed by over 200 people and sent to York Township Officials.

On February 27, York Township denied the special exception request with a 3-2 vote. In March, the site developer—150 Country Club Road Association, LLC—terminated its contract to purchase the land. We agree with those opposed to the development of this land. We will continue to support the movement to protect this natural wetlands area, its waterway, and the valuable recreational area for local residents and school children.
